What to Expect After Orthopedic Surgery for Your Pet

If your pet has a fractured leg, he or she may require orthopedic surgery. Without an operation, the bone will heal improperly and could hinder your cat or dog's ability to walk or run. At Sunrise Pet Hospital, our veterinarian will perform an examination of the injured area, provide a description of the surgical procedure, and let you know what to expect afterward.

Prepare For The Orthopedic Surgery And The Trip Home

The orthopedic surgery will require leaving your pet at our office overnight. You may be advised to limit feedings and water before transporting your pet to our facility. Before the operation, your pet will be sedated. This will ensure that the animal does not experience any pain.

Once the surgery is complete, a sterile dressing will be applied to the incision site. Your dog will need to rest for a while and may act sluggish due to the sedation. Be prepared to carefully load your pet into a carrier before heading home. Set up a quiet area for your cat or dog to sleep in which includes access to food and water.

Follow the Pet Surgery Aftercare Instructions

Refer to the list of aftercare instructions that is provided. Your pet may be required to take a pain relief medication or an antibiotic. You can fill the prescriptions at your local pharmacy. Refrain from playing with your pet and avoid taking your dog for walks for a couple of weeks during the recovery period.
